But why blame for us not an expert on something they have not believed? Fault of the Chinese restaurants.
You have answered your question. Many people believe that the Buddha is an idol of fat you see in Chinese restaurants and even on television, and the average person, unless they have an interest in Buddhism and the religions of the world are not out of the way to learn the truth.
The fact is that all religions have their myths and misconceptions. It is something we have to live with it and do not let that bother us much.

First you must understand that, like Christianity, there are different types of Buddhism, has nothing to do with the Chinese restaurants and Western perceptions of the people!

Buddha and Jesus is a myth about something other than a whole man. Now there are people who have lived in the "spirit" of the two, but no one has ever, there was a man or people and businesses. It's mythology.
I have a big bald Buddha above my fireplace, I think I bought in Italy. The fat Buddha is generally regarded as a Buddha, is not it? Rub the belly for luck, etc., etc. I also have other fats and soon bought the Buddha in Korea and Japan.
Many people, especially people of other religions, we find it necessary, all they get taken as "false", even without until they strike. So I tried to learn more about a particular faith, to experience it before.
So many people believe that God and Jesus, white men if they are not. I mean, if you come to find a picture of Jesus, first and foremost as a white man .. and films that depict him as a white man .. Even with God, describing him as a white .. Many images are false, because people want to believe they do and do not let them know the truth
